NACARBIDE is a band from Thailand which released its debut album a couple weeks ago. We asked to Hassy (bass) to talks with us and tell us about this new album, about the band and about the so little known Thailand metal scene.
To know you better, can you please tell why the name of the band is NACARBIDE?
This is a coined word mix with NAC means HEAVY in Thai and CARBIDE means binary compound of carbon with an element of lower or comparable electronegativity. In summary, a kind of heavy and hard metal.
For the people who are just about to know for the first time ever, please recommend two songs to start with.
Edge of Life and Deceiving Me.
For us, NACABIRDE plays Heavy Metal. For you, what does NACARBIDE play?
That’s it. We call this New Wave Of Asian Heavy Metal but it’s 90% same with NWOTHM, I think.
You are an international band, right? I mean, you got members from different countries. How come?
Yes we are. The most reasonable reason is many Japanese manufacturing industry open the business in Thailand. Most of us are employee or families of it. And found opportunity to play with someone in Bangkok.
We don’t hear too much about the metal scene in Thailand, what is it like? What are there bands, concerts and fans like?
In Thailand, traditional old school metal band is really few. And I’m sorry but I don’t know the detail categorized metal genre how it’s called. There are some great groove style, deathcore style, progressive death style band.
About venue, Bangkok has 2 places to play metal music permanently. One of it’s called IMMORTAL BAR and the other one is called THE ROCK PUB. There is another place to play metal but not only metal.
About population of metal is not so many like Indonesia. This is just my opinion, most of Thai people loves old local country style and slow ballades not only old people but also new generation compare with Japan.
However, show of GUNS ‘N ROSES at huge stadium in this year’s tickets were sold out within 2 days.
But people most excited tune was SWEET CHILD O’ MINE in Bangkok .Can you believe it? I was so surprised. Never happen in Japan this matter.
I’ve seen many pictures of you along with other great bands such as FREEDOM CALL or ENFORCER. Did you play along with them? Have you played with any other bands?
Negative. We just drunk with them and SKULLFIST. We played as opening act of EARTHSHAKER and CINQ ELEMENT, SUPERBLOOD. All of these are from Japan.
In Thailand, we cannot find smart PA engineer .Means If we play more than two bands same day at same place, definitely head liner gets sound problem 150%! There is no meaning with sound check in daytime.
Can you tell me in how many concerts have you been the first act?
Only 3 times. We always request to organizer to we play 1st because we never drink any alcohols before the show. Means we want to drink earlier!
Hitomi’s voice is awesome! Did you always want to have a female voice in the band or it just happened?
It just happened. If I didn’t meet her and Masa (guitar), we didn’t get to idea to create our original songs.
When did you start the recording sessions of this album?
April 2017.
What kind of topics does your lyrics talk about?
Courage for survive. Never losing hope.
Is this the first time that NACARBIDE recorded something? Don’t you have any unreleased songs?
As NACARBIDE, this is first time. Actually we recorded 2 more songs but we felt these songs need blush up more so we didn’t include these for 1st album.
Who made the cover of this album? It is totally awesome!
We requested to one of Thai artist called GIG GORE GRUNGE. He draws many kind of painting not only rock. Now his activity is only in underground but we believe his talent is not only underground.
Why are you releasing this album by yourselves? Did you ever try to get in touch with a label to launch this album?
We are not interested in it now because only releasing is so easy by ourselves. Of course if we hope to sell this album all over the world, we need support of them but can they promise it? We don’t think so.
And I know some tragedy happened between label and band in Japan. The band was really excellent and famous players but they couldn’t success for it. This matter is not concern with NACARBIDE but I feel it doesn’t work well for the band always. That’s the reason.
How many copies of this album have you released and how are you distributing it?
Fortunately, 500 pcs of 1st lot was sold out include reservation. Today we ordered 500 more for 2nd lot.
What are your plans for the rest of 2017?
Now we asking to organizer about opening act of LOUDNESS live in Bangkok but it’s unrealistic for the reason stated above. Next option is joining the event in Singapore or Jakarta. And join 2 or 3 small event in Bangkok.
